The new center is a residential-style building located on a 1/2 acre university parcel on the gateway road to the main campus. The project included the demolition of the 4,000 SF Ruggles House and the construction of a two-story wood structure of approximately 5,000 sf. The spaces include multipurpose rooms, a student lounge and resource area, a kitchen, and office space. The site development included parking and beautiful landscaping. The center’s mission is to improve the experience and lives of the LGBTQ community and the larger community at URI by providing a safe and welcoming environment by providing meaningful programs and services.

About the Client

The new Gender and Sexuality Center provides a facility which is able to support the mission and needs of the LGBTQ community and straight allies. URI is the only public institution in Rhode Island offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional students the distinctive educational opportunities of a major research university.
